February is all about love. From heart-shaped decorations to Valentine’s Day dinners with loved ones, there are many ways to celebrate. But did you know that February 20th is celebrated as National Love Your Pet Day? Even though we love our pets every day, it’s nice to have one, dedicated day to give them all the attention they deserve.

Although it’s unclear when the holiday began or why it started, what is clear is it was adopted in North America to promote quality time with your pets. Dogs specifically are very social creatures. They require constant attention, camaraderie with their “pack”—a.k.a. you. February 20th is the perfect day to show your pup how much you love them.

If you haven’t celebrated it before, here are three fun ways to enjoy the day with your pup.

3 Pup-approved Ideas for National Love Your Pet Day

#1: Spoil them with pupcakes.

Every good pup deserves an extra something sweet, but overdoing the treats isn’t always the best way to go. One way to show them you care while keeping them on a pup-friendly diet is with pupcakes.

While there are many different recipes available, some things to keep in mind when selecting the best one are healthy ingredients. Things like honey, peanut butter, and shaved apples are dog-friendly ways to sweeten a pupcake in a way that doesn’t mess with their diet. #2: Take them toy shopping.

Gift-giving and quality time is every pup’s love language. Take them on a shopping spree and pick up all their favourite toys—feel free to let them pick out their own! Then you can be sure they’ll love it. Remember, when picking out toys choose ones that promote your pup’s health in order to ensure they aren’t dangerous or harmful. The Ontario SPCA has a list of dog-safe toys to keep an eye out for.

#3: Schedule a game day.

What better way to spend some quality time together than with a day filled with fun and games? Break out the classics like fetch. Or, plan an outdoor play date with one of their (and your) best buds. You can find a complete list of dog-friendly parks in Ontario here.

At The Pooches Playhouse, we believe that pets should be celebrated every day.

That’s why we make your pup’s care our top priority. We’re always here when your dog needs some extra love while their humans are away, working late, or simply need a day off.
