Want to Spoil Your Pooch While Keeping Their Diet on Track?

Yes, dog treats can be healthy too. At Pooches Playhouse, we understand how important your dog’s diet is for their development and overall health. According to a study done by Canadian Veterinarians, 60% of pet owners are more likely to buy food based on what their dog likes versus their nutritional needs. The question that then arises, is how can you meet your dog’s diet while also allowing them to eat what they love? We’ve included some of our favourite low-calorie and healthy dog treats and snacks below to help answer this question:

Apples

“An apple a day keeps the veterinarian away!” Isn’t that how the saying goes? This crunchy snack is a perfect, healthy treat for pups of all ages. They’re low calorie, rich in vitamins A and C, and have a low fat and protein content. According to the American Kennel Club, this makes them the perfect snack for senior dogs. To prepare, remove the cores, seeds, and skin. If your pooch has a sweet tooth, this could be the alternative you’ve been looking for.

Plain Greek Yogurt

Not only is it good for you, but for your dog’s tummy too! Yogurt contains natural bacterial cultures that promote gut health. Note: if your dog is lactose intolerant it is best to avoid it. Additionally, ensuring the yogurt is plain and not full of sugars is vital. Greek yogurt is your dog’s food equivalent of a belly rub.

Pupcakes

The delicious treats are the perfect way to spoil your pup on milestones like birthdays, or simply a once-in-a-while healthy treat. There are many different ways to prepare pupcakes, but you can check out one of our favourites here. This healthy alternative to a cupcake, made from carrots and apples, will have your pooch jumping for joy.

Blueberries

Packed with antioxidants and fibre, this superfood will turn your dog into a super-pooch! Blueberries especially make a great snack in those hotter summer months, as pups can eat them frozen. A fun way to serve blueberries to your pup is to mash and freeze them in different shapes. A pup-sicle, so to speak.

How Often Should You Feed Your Dog Treats?

As great as it is that we want to always keep our dogs happy, treats should be served in moderation. That being said, keeping your treats healthy and nutritious can be a great addition to your pup’s health and happiness.

Your dog is a part of the family, so they deserve to snack like family. At The Pooches Playhouse, we provide healthy, nutritious treats and snacks to promote your pup’s good health and mood.
